“Quantitatively speaking, gold is a reliable hedge against inflation. In fact, it is the best hedge against inflation, with a correlation of 0.34 since 1900. Only commodity futures come close, with a correlation of 0.21,” said Phil Kosmala, managing partner at Taiko, a full-service OCIO for RIAs.
To explain gold’s disappointing performance in 2021 and 2022, Phil notes that different assets perform well with different types of inflation, like energy futures performing during cost-push inflation and industrial metals performing during demand-pull inflation. He also shares his confidence in gold over TIPS, noting their susceptibility to interest-rate moves, while also warning investors against cryptocurrency as an inflation hedge.
